Blackriver Pro Fingerboarding

Martin Ehrenberger, a trained carpenter who had already been building full-size ramps in Upper Franconia, starts Blackriver to make professional fingerboard ramps. The idea came out of a 1998 trip to the United States, where he bought his first plastic fingerboard, and a friend's handmade miniature ramp he tried afterwards. Only the year is on record.

The first thing Blackriver ever sold was a wooden halfpipe with vert. It is still in the catalogue more than 25 years later, with only modest changes to the design, which makes it the closest thing the scene has to a heritage obstacle.

Blackriver runs its first contest, with 16 participants. It grew into the Fingerboard World Championship. The date is not fully settled: the company chronology and the Fast Fingers site both say 2000, while a 2023 interview with Ehrenberger recalled the first contest as 2001.

Blackriver starts placing rideable miniature parks in skate shops, skate halls and youth centres, on the theory that a scene forms wherever there is somewhere to session. By 2003 Ehrenberger counted roughly 30 of them around Germany.

Blackriver introduces Riptape, a smoother alternative to gritty miniature griptape that was first useful for tuning plastic completes. It made setup preference a thing fingerboarders argue about, and it is now a Blackriver sub-brand in its own right.

With riders travelling in from abroad, Fast Fingers 11 is run as the first Fingerboard World Championship. Elias Assmuth of Steyr, Austria was the first world champion.

Blackriver moves past wood into cast concrete obstacles, chasing the surface, edge and wear of a real spot instead of just its shape. Concrete barriers and ledges still run through the range.

Blackriver tours the United States for the first time, taking parks, demos and sessions to local scenes. Ehrenberger later pointed to this period as one of the brand's biggest booms.

FlatFace Fingerboards takes on Blackriver distribution in the United States. The relationship still holds and predates Blackriver's own US store by fifteen years.

Blackriver launches its own trucks, built from full-size skateboard truck geometry with engineers and riders rather than adapted from toy hardware. BRTs became the brand's flagship product and the reference point most other pro trucks are measured against.

An entry-level line of wooden completes, meant to close the jump from a cheap plastic toy to a full pro setup. Bollie is now a Blackriver sub-brand.

Brick joins wood and concrete in the obstacle range, continuing the run at real architecture in miniature rather than generic toy shapes.

The BRT redesign: reinforced steel single axles, stronger locknuts, thicker reinforced baseplates and an embossed skull. Documented at launch in 29, 32 and 34 mm.

A reworked coping profile for the ramp range, aimed at how a grind actually catches, locks and slides at fingerboard scale. Typical Blackriver: a small piece of geometry treated as a product in its own right.

The 25th anniversary World Championship in Schwarzenbach an der Saale. Blackriver counted around 1,500 visitors from 28 nations and 122 starters. Ramon Angelow won after a Game of Skate that ran more than 30 minutes.

Blackriver's first own store outside Germany, carrying the full range alongside parks to session, in what had become its largest customer market. Opening demand was heavy enough that visitors were let in in groups.

June 20

Alex Christ becomes world champion in Schwarzenbach, ahead of Danil Aldoshin and Francisco Martins, eighteen months after his first pro model. Fast Fingers now alternates: a live championship in even years, an online edition in between.
